personal stories Jim

“I had always been an active person, but I started getting real tired at work. I went to the doctor for a check up, and I happened to mention I was having some light pain around my heart. I didn’t think it was anything serious as it wasn’t often and only lasted a couple seconds.

“My doctor referred me to Duke Cardiology to get a stress test. I wasn’t on the treadmill more than five minutes when it hit. Pain. The cardiologist looked at me and said, ‘You are getting ready to have a heart attack. We are going to the Heart Center, and we are going now!’

“It all happened so fast. I called my family, and in an hour’s time, I was on the operating table to have stents put in my heart. I was not afraid because I knew the Lord would guide me through this. As they were taking me in, the nurse leaned over and said, ‘Mrs. Locklear, I want you to know the doctor you have is a Christian, he’ll take good care of you.’ That made me feel even better. I wasn’t worried one bit.

“Everyone at the Heart Center was so nice. The nurses and the doctors took the time to talk to me. They made me feel very comfortable. I’m so glad Duke was here. If I had to go somewhere else, I might not be here today.

“I feel good now. I don’t do all the things I used to, but everything is going to be just fine. I go out and work in the yard. I like to use my hands—making crafts, decorating, even painting and laying tile. Being active is what keeps you young. But most of all, I love spending time with my grandchildren.

“I’m going to be around a long time. I tell people, ‘I’m going to live to be a hundred’—might not, but I feel like I can.”
